How to get to Skaftafell by road
Deciding how to get to Skaftafell starts with the Ring Road, Route 1, followed by Road 998 to the camping and service area. Reykjavík is the western approach, while Höfn is the eastern approach. Choose your overnight base and the exact meeting point for any booked walk before fixing a tight arrival schedule. A tour described as starting in Skaftafell may use a specific hut or a different regional base.
Höfn lies 130 km east of Skaftafell, and Kirkjubæjarklaustur lies 70 km to the west. Distances help locate a base, but weather, breaks and road conditions still shape the journey. Leave room in your plan for arrival procedures rather than treating the navigation estimate as your activity check-in time.

Bus 52 via Vík
The timetable valid from 24 August 2026 links Reykjavík-Mjódd, Vík, Skaftafell, Jökulsárlón and Höfn. It shows separate journey sections in Vík, so plan for the change there rather than expecting one uninterrupted vehicle. The through service is shown for Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday. Check the timetable for your actual date before arranging accommodation around it.
Eastbound departures shown are Mjódd at 14:18, arrival in Vík at 17:00 with onward departure at 17:30, and Skaftafell at 19:23. Westbound, the timetable shows Höfn at 13:10, Skaftafell at 15:14, Vík at 17:00 with onward departure at 17:30, and Mjódd at 20:08. The westbound Skaftafell departure is earlier than the eastbound arrival: plan an overnight stay rather than a same-day return from Reykjavík.
Keep the bus arrival separate from the start of a guided activity. A local glacier shuttle is part of the activity from its meeting point, not a replacement for the regional bus. Compare overnight bases if the timetable leaves you arriving after your preferred activity departure.
A local glacier hike
Once in Skaftafell, join this hike from the park parking lot.

A glacier trek after you reach Skaftafell
The extended Falljökull walk starts at the booking hut in the Skaftafell parking area. It includes a certified guide, glacier gear and a 4x4 bus to the glacier foot, with a total duration of five hours. Travel from KEF or Reykjavík is separate.
Taxi and transfer from Keflavík Airport (KEF)
Keflavík Airport uses the code KEF. Reykjavík's domestic airport uses RKV, and the local airfield is another location again. Enter the full airport and destination when arranging a vehicle. A booking to Reykjavík ends in the capital; reaching Skaftafell then requires its own onward plan. Keep the airport leg, any city stop and the journey along the south coast visible in your itinerary.
For a quoted taxi or private transfer, specify your actual Skaftafell destination, passenger group and arrival date. Compare the journey being offered rather than a price for an airport-to-city route. Avoid attaching a fixed glacier departure to your flight arrival without allowing for the road journey and changing conditions. The glacier walk guide explains local activity planning once you reach the area.
Car rental and parking
Use Keflavík Airport (KEF) as the pickup location when comparing rental cars for an airport arrival. Match pickup and return arrangements to your flight itinerary, then consider the driving needed between your accommodation and tour base. Keep the rental booking separate from local activity transport; the latter begins only at the activity's stated meeting point.
At Skaftafell, the national park applies vehicle parking charges. The list displayed on 5 November 2026 showed 1,110 ISK for a car with up to five seats. Payment is valid until midnight that day and permits re-entry. Read vehicle fees and payment for the other categories, and include parking in your road budget alongside the rental itself.
Find a rental car at Keflavík Airport (KEF) on Economybookings.
Weather checks and an onward lagoon stop
Before every drive, consult road.is for road conditions, vedur.is for weather and SafeTravel.is for travel advice. Winter calls for suitable tyres and equipment, extra time and flexible plans. Four-wheel drive does not remove the risk of sliding on ice. A clear-looking stretch of road can still be affected by wind, snow or rain.
If continuing along the coast, use the separate guide to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. Keep that visit as an onward stop with its own time allowance. For walking from the Skaftafell base, the visitor centre is the place for trail information; glacier and natural ice-cave access requires a certified local guide and suitable equipment.
Arrival questions
Can I arrive by bus and return to Reykjavík that day?
The timetable from 24 August 2026 shows the westbound departure before the eastbound arrival at Skaftafell. Arrange an overnight stay and a suitable later departure.
Does the glacier trek collect me at KEF?
The trek starts locally at Skaftafell. Its 4x4 bus carries participants from the base to the glacier foot; it is not airport or Reykjavík transport.
Which road leads to the service area?
Leave Ring Road 1 for Road 998 to the Skaftafell camping and service area. Use your activity confirmation to locate the exact tour meeting point.
