Skaftafell Parking: Vehicle Fees, Payment and Visitor Access

Skaftafell parking is charged by vehicle class. Separate that payment from a glacier booking and plan time to reach the meeting hut on foot.

How Skaftafell parking fits into a visit

Skaftafell parking is a vehicle charge, rather than an admission price for each person walking in the area. For a car with up to 5 seats, the national park's price list displayed 1,110 ISK when accessed on 5 November 2026. Larger vehicles and motorcycles have different rates. Choose the class that matches the vehicle, rather than multiplying a car price by the number of people travelling.

Keep parking, camping and guided activities as separate parts of the budget. A glacier booking can include equipment, a guide and a local transfer while still leaving parking payable at the meeting area. Equally, paying to park is not a reservation for a guided activity. The tour overview explains the activity choices, while getting to Skaftafell covers the approach.

Vehicle classes and fees in ISK

These amounts were displayed in the national park's price list on 5 November 2026. They apply to vehicle classes, not separate adult, child or senior admission tickets. Use the current signs and payment information when arriving, particularly if travelling in a minibus or a larger passenger vehicle.

The payment is valid until midnight on the payment day and allows re-entry. If visiting another fee-charging parking area on the same calendar day, a 50 percent discount applies there. Plan around the calendar day rather than treating the payment as a rolling period into the following morning.

Payment and number-plate registration

The national park charges the vehicle fee. Number-plate recognition and on-site payment machines are part of the parking arrangements, with an online payment service also used. Follow the payment instructions for the vehicle being used that day, and keep its registration details available. Take time to deal with the payment before setting off on a walk or joining a tour.

For visitors with a disabled parking permit, an exemption is available through an application and confirmed registration of the vehicle's number plate. Arrange that confirmation rather than relying on displaying the permit alone. This distinction matters when using a rental vehicle, because the relevant registration is the one attached to the vehicle entering the parking area.

What a glacier booking includes

The glacier activity presented on this page lists a Vatnajökull National Park fee among its inclusions. Its meeting instructions also state that parking fees apply at the Skaftafell parking lot. Budget for that parking payment separately. The activity is a guided glacier hike, rather than a general admission ticket for people visiting the park on foot.

The overall activity duration is 250 minutes. A certified glacier guide, a 4x4 bus transfer from Skaftafell to the foot of the glacier, crampons, a walking axe, a helmet and a harness are included. Arrive at the booking hut 10 to 15 minutes before departure. Allow additional time for parking, payment and walking to the hut; the meeting time is the time to be with the activity team.

After parking: trails, the visitor centre and camping

The approach leads from the Ring Road onto road 998 towards the camping and service area. At Skaftafellsstofa visitor centre, staff and rangers provide information about nature, trails and activities. Choose a land walk to suit the weather and available time; the Svartifoss circuit and the wider hiking network are covered separately.

Camping has its own registration and payment arrangements. If staying overnight, use the camping guide and keep the camping charge and vehicle fee distinct in your planning. A daytime parking payment should not be treated as a campsite booking or as payment for an overnight stay.

Stay on designated roads and parking areas: off-road driving is prohibited in Skaftafell. On foot, respect marked paths, keep dogs on leads and avoid disturbing wildlife. Enter glaciers and natural ice caves only with a certified local guide and suitable equipment. Before driving, check road.is, vedur.is and SafeTravel.is for road, weather and travel information, especially when winter conditions affect the approach.

Parking questions

Is the car fee charged for every passenger?

The tariff is per vehicle class. The displayed fee for a car with up to 5 seats was 1,110 ISK on 5 November 2026, rather than a separate fee for each passenger.

Can the car leave and return?

The payment permits re-entry until midnight on the same payment day. The validity follows the calendar day.

Does the glacier activity include parking?

The activity lists a national park fee, but its meeting instructions state that parking fees apply. Plan a separate parking payment and reach the booking hut before the scheduled departure.

How does the disabled parking exemption work?

Apply for the number-plate exemption and obtain confirmation. A parking permit alone should not be treated as completed registration for the exemption.
